And All That Jazz

When one has the opportunity to be an Event Photographer for the Pasadena Jazz Fest at the LA Arboretum, one does not turn that opportunity down. This is what a friend of mine calls “professional play” – and the more of it in my life, the better.

The lineup at this year’s Jazz Fest was ridiculous.  We’re talking Stanley Clarke, Everlast, Booker T, Doc Powell, Hubert Laws…and the list of jazz Greats went on and on.

The thing about jazz is, you feel it. You experience it. You jive to it.  You swoon to it.

And I’m a sucker for taking photos of beautiful, emotionally unrenstrained experiences. Like weddings – but that’s another post.

Kevin Eubanks (the right-hand man of Jay Leno for all the good years) was one of the first performers I got to photograph. He seemed happy, mellow, and smooth, just as he was on the Tonight Show.

P.S. If you recognize the woman to his left, you’ve watched too many car chases on Fox 11 news.

After Kevin’s set was over, I set out to investigate the food situation.

Come on, if you know me, then you knew that I wasn’t going to get through this blog post without some shots of the food!

The cuisine at the Jazz Fest wasn’t healthy by any means, but the best food rarely is.

I challenge you to not crave a funnel cake right now. Its the perfect summer festival dessert.

As the day continued, the tempo of the music quickened and the bands began to ooze with soul…

And the light began to get really pretty.

I have to say, the arboretum just can’t be beat as a concert venue. Its intimate yet grand; wild yet well-structured.

And it couldn’t be more gorgeous.

These guys frequently play at redwhite+bluezz in Pasadena. They really got the crowd dancing!

Then dusk turned to darkness, and Everlast took the stage:

God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes

‘Cause then you really might know what it’s like to sing the blues

Then you really might know what it’s like

To have to choose.

For me, the highlight of the evening was Stanley Clark, bass legend. He was declared one of the most influential musicians in the world when he was 25 years old and hasn’t slowed down.

What struck me about Stanley is that he seemed like a reserved kind of a guy, but put a bass guitar in his hands and he couldn’t hold back how the jazz affected him: he looked like he was in pain, elated and in worship all at the same time.

Stanley Clark’s is method for playing bass is unique: he holds the guitar at a 90-degree angle. This sharpens the way the strings are plucked, thus intensifying the sound, or, as Wikipedia calls it, leading to a “biting percussive attack.”

But really, its lovely.

The music played into the night, well after the scheduled hour of closing.

Jazz has a life of its own and cannot be subjected to linear schedules. It is surprising, free, and unpredictable.

And sometimes, that’s just what I need.

Rebecca + (Mia): Red Letter Days

Planners + Pie is an exciting new series on our blog in which we interview Wedding Planners whilst eating pie! Is it legal for this to be ‘work’? I hope so. At least that’s what we’re telling the IRS.

Our hope for Planners + Pie is that if you’re engaged, or know somebody who is engaged, you’ll not only have a referral for a dynamic wedding photography duo, but a phenomenal Wedding Planner as well.

We’ll make no promises about how often we’ll be showcasing Planners + Pie; we’ll just wait until the crème de le crème of Wedding Planners cross our path. And when they do, we’ll be sure to share our interview with you (but not our pie).

So without further ado, allow us to introduce our inaugeral Planner + Pie!

The talented Rebecca Gaffney of Red Letter Days!

d + m: Thanks for allowing us to interview you over a slice of pie, Rebecca. Tell us about Red Letter Days!

rebecca: Sure! Red Letter Days is the Wedding Planning business I have with my business partner, Mia Saling.

{ Sadly, Mia could make it to our interview. So, Rebecca did the next best thing and pulled up a photo of Mia on her iphone while we ate pie. You were with us in spirit, Mia! }

Red Letter Days is based just North of San Diego, so, many of our weddings are in the San Diego, Palm Springs, and Los Angeles areas.

d + m: Rebecca, what kind of pie will you be having today?

rebecca: I’ll have a slice of the peach pie, please.

d + m: Good choice. We’ll have the old-fashioned apple pie (daniel) and the lemon meringue (megan).

{ mmmmm }

d + m: There are certain moments that inspire and motivate us in our business. For example, I (megan) love getting to see or hear the client’s reaction when they see their images for the first time.

What is your favorite moment when planning and executing a wedding?

rebecca: My absolute favorite moment is when the bride and her father are standing behind closed doors about to walk down the aisle. There are so many emotions contained within that one moment.

d + m: What is your method for creating unique, custom weddings for you brides + grooms?

rebecca: I begin by getting a sense of the identity and vision of the bride and groom, and then use the resources available to me to create a wedding out of their concept. It’s not about projecting my style onto their wedding, it’s all about creating a wedding that perfectly suits them and their style. I adore working with brides and grooms who know who they are and can communicate their identity to me; those are the weddings that are truly unique and personal.

d + m: Describe your ideal bride + groom to work with.

rebecca: My ideal bride and groom are clear and direct in their communication style, like me. I enjoy couples who have a sense of certainty about what they want and are willing to speak candidly throughout the planning process.

d + m: Could you tell us about a wedding you planned that was completely customized and unique to one of your clients?

rebecca: I’m pretty proud of Andrea and Scott’s wedding at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in 2008. First of all, Andrea and Scott were completely in love and a joy to be around – in fact, I’m still friends with Andrea. We planned a gorgeous, Asian-inspired wedding with black, white and wasabi green for their colors. We paid a lot of attention to details, and completely transformed the venue: the escort card table was adorned with floral sushi; there were bamboo centerpieces strung with votives, and up-lit yoshi screens gave the room an amber glow. It was a beautiful and touching wedding.

d + m: We love meeting with each client before the photo session. We find that this allows us to take photos that really capture our clients’ relationships. How often do you meet with brides + grooms before the Big Day?

rebecca: Mia and I will often meet with clients 10-15 times before the wedding to see the ceremony and reception sites, meet vendors, and plan the day. Our packages are customizable to include unlimited phone meetings and in-person meetings as-needed.

d + m: That’s wonderful. Can you tell us about a time when your skills as a Wedding Planner really paid off, and you got to save the (wedding) day?

rebecca: Well, I’m proud to say that we’ve never had a complete wedding meltdown. That’s the result of good planning! However, one wedding comes to mind. The bride used vendors we had recommended for everything except the florist. On the wedding day, the flowers arrived and they looked absolutely terrible. Mia ended up taking apart the bouquets and completely re-creating the boutineers. By the time of the wedding began, Mia had transformed the flowers. That wedding–and the flowers–ended up being featured in Ceremony magazine!

d + m: Great story! Well, our pie has been reduced to crumbs, so we have only one more question: what is your hope for the couples whose weddings you plan?

rebecca: I hope that they will have both commitment and passion in their marriage.

Thank you Rebecca Gaffney and Mia Saling of Red Letter Days.

Dear Readers: We whole-heartedly recommend their Wedding Planning services!

Also, we recommend pie. You know, in general.

Tiff - August 30, 2010 - 12:27 pm

I love the new series! You are missing a follow up, though. I am thinking something along the lines of “Lucky Neighbors + Leftovers”.

megan - August 30, 2010 - 11:10 pm

Smooth, Tiff. How about Waffles + Westras?

Jordan { Maternity }

Jordan as always been beautiful, but now that she’s expecting?

Yeah, she’s stunning.

You probably recognize her from our previous photoshoot with Jordan and her husband, Rob.

Or maybe you’ve seen her on the Union Station photo at the top of this blog?

How many photoshoots does it take for someone to become a muse?

What I loved about Jordan’s maternity photoshoot was trying to capture both sides of Jordan: she exudes both maternal strength and tenderness.

Everyone that knows this beautiful woman knows that she has a keen sense of justice. Jordan has dedicated the past few years to advocacy for woman and children with limited resources.

In fact, Jordan is this close to finishing her graduate work at Fuller Seminary (my alma mater + daniel’s as well) where she will receive her Masters in Intercultural Studies, with an emphasis in at-risk children.

Jordan’s husband, Rob, is earning his MBA at Pepperdine University, where he is learning how to combine his interest in business with worldwide social justice.

These two three are going to change the world, no question.

Most of the photos from Jordan’s maternity shoot were, shall we say, au naturel. They’re slightly too personal for the web, so this blog post will be brief.

Jordan, you are so special.

I can’t wait to meet the little guy or girl in your belly, and to surround them with love in our church!

What a blessed child.

Warmly,

Megan

The Maljians { Lifestyle Family Portraits }

Allow me to introduce you to the Maljians: Jen + Rafi + Madison + Micah!

Introductions? What am I talking about?! Chances are, you already know this family.

The Maljians have lots (and lots) of friends and family who love them.

We first met Jen + Rafi at Pasadena First Church of the Nazarene (Paz Naz).  I couldn’t even tell you how long the Lundgrens have known the Maljians…but its been a long time.

Over a decade, probably more than two.

Rafi’s family was also Daniel’s introduction to Armenian cuisine.  Tell your Mom thanks for the unforgettable baklava, Rafi!

This month marks 10 years of marriage for Jen + Rafi.

Can we talk about their chemistry?

These two are definitely best friends in love..

Yup, Jen + Rafi are a solid parenting team.

I’m talking the Lakers of parenting (do you like how I tied in the Lakers, Rafi?)

But really, these kids look easy to love.

Micah kept us laughing throughout the photoshoot. He’s got such a hilarious sense of humor!

You just watch…in 12 years, this is Monrovia High School’s ASB President.

After a long morning of modeling at the LA Arboretum in Arcadia, Maddie was ready for her beauty sleep.

Smart girl.

Jen + Rafi, your family is an image of the kind of family we hope to have for ourselves someday. Thanks for being awesome.

Warmly,

megan + daniel

Janell - August 21, 2010 - 6:47 pm

Wow. This photo shoot is gorgeous. How fun to see pics of Rafi’s family! Megan + Daniel, just wanted to let you know that when I’m having a long or stressful day, your blog is where I go to treat myself. A few minutes reading your posts and looking at your photography and I am newly inspired and in love with life. Makes me excited to live in this world. Thank you.

daniel + megan - August 22, 2010 - 12:23 am

Janell,

That may be the sweetest comment we’ve ever gotten on our little blog. =) I’m so glad our blog has that effect on you! We hope it can be a source of joy and inspiration for many others as well.

Jean + Chris { Maternity }

Jean and I go way back. We go back to the days when I dyed my hair with hydrogen peroxide on a whim, had food stuck in my braces pretty much all the time, and teared up if I wasn’t asked to slow dance at Winter Formal.

Ah, sixth grade.

Although we had been dear friends years ago, Jean and I lost touch until facebook came to the rescue (editorial note: facebook can be kind of jarring, no? You have a mental image of your friend from school, and then all of a sudden, WHAM! You see pictures of her all grown up and gorgeous with a loving husband and a baby in her belly!)

I digress. When Jean asked if Daniel and I would take lifestyle maternity photos up in the Bay Area, I was so excited. What’s not to love about maternity shoots? Loving couple, cute belly, hope + expectation, and in this case, a rekindled friendship. We have the best job ever.

We spent a lazy late summer afternoon with Jean + Chris in an enchanting redwood forest, just outside of Berkeley. Lovely.

What struck me about Jean + Chris is the ease with which they melt into one another. I don’t think they went two minutes without giggling together and holding each other close..

It made me happy to see Jean so happy.

Jean and Chris were college sweethearts at UCR and are both super smart. Chris uses his mad math skills to build computer systems for cars at Bosh, and Jean uses her love of chemistry as an environmentally-friendly paint engineer at Dow. Which makes me wonder: why didn’t you give me some pointers in Ms. Downey’s class, Jean? I really could have used your tutelage!

By the way, Jean isn’t the only one expecting..

Jean says that Chris is having his own baby: his doctoral dissertation. Apparently labor is exhausting.;-)

Aren’t Jean + Chris perfect together? Their baby is due in December: a little boy named Evan Collin.

Hope Evan gets his Mama’s looks and his Papa’s smarts…Or his Mama’s smarts and his Papa’s looks…

Oh, wait. He’s gonna be perfect.

Warmly,

Megan
