How It Felt to be Photographers for the California Philharmonic

In a word? Great.

With the help of some friends, we landed a gig to be the photographers for the California Philharmonic’s Festival on the Green at the L.A. Arboretum.

This annual concert is just the thing that we would happily pay good money to attend on a leisurely summer evening.  So we were thrilled when we got the chance to g0 on a date to a Cal Phil concert and ‘work’ at the same time!

Allow me to set the scene: The Arboretum abounds with lush foliage of rare trees and plants, which was the backdrop for the California Philharmonic’s melodic renditions of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Puccini, and Verdi.

Families settled in with bottles of wine and picnic baskets packed with goodies from one of our favorite local gourmet restaurants: Julienne.

Arguably one of the best parts about going to the Arboretum for any occasion (wedding, concert, outing..) is that there are over 100 peacocks that roam the grounds like they own the place.

After making friends with the peacocks but before the concert, we made sure to get some shots from backstage. After all, this was the first time we had a backstage pass to…Oh, ANYTHING!

These musicians will leave you breathless. I literally saw someone get chills listening to the ornamentation (that crazy crescendo at the end) of the aria “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera.

If you can’t catch them at the Arboretum over the next few weekends, make sure to go to a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall!

This was the view from our table.  Fresh strawberries, couscous salad, Clementine Izzes, a variety of sandwiches, and chocolate-peanut butter clusters were what I stashed in our personal picnic basket, if you were wondering.

There were a number of operatic soloists throughout the evening, but my favorite was soprano Angel Blue (second from the right). Lovely.

Overall, the evening could only be described as a feast for the senses. The magic of Webber’s music, the idyllic atmosphere, the warm breeze, the wafts of wine and chocolate in the air, the ornate costumes…

Blessed: that’s us.
