The first time we met Lauren + George, we invited them over for Fudgesicles. Because that’s how we roll.
We hadn’t even fully moved into our new apartment, but I had been sure to stock up on Fudgesicles because of a sweltering heatwave. On a whim, I invited a few neighbors over for a delectable frozen treat. By the time our Fudgesicles had melted, our friendship with Lauren + George had solidified!
Daniel and I were about to begin graduate school for Marriage and Family Therapy at Fuller Seminary, and George was beginning his long journey to a doctorate in Psychology. Lauren has no need for graduate school because she is smarter than all of us combined. Believe me, I’ve played Scrabble with her many times…and not ONCE have I won.
On a typical morning, you’ll probably find Lauren + George jogging around eight miles (before pondering the mysteries of neuroscience, but after devotions). Oddly, Lauren + George don’t scream their accomplishments from the rooftops – which I would undoubtedly do if I were in their place!
Did you know that Lauren + George spontaneously dance the tango when in the lobby of the Biltmore hotel?
I digress. Daniel and I quickly bonded with Lauren + George at Fuller and our mutual friends, Emily + Donovan. All six of us lived in the same student apartment building and had gotten married the summer before graduate school. Our friendships developed into a weekly dinner or dessert night rotating between each of our apartments.
I don’t know if Lauren or Emily had this experience, but for me hosting our dinner/dessert nights felt like playing house. I got to put on my apron and plan a menu for company. And I LOVED it.
If I had to pick a highlight of our gatherings though, there’s one memory that takes the cake (ha).
The occasion was George’s Birthday; the place was their apartment. The dessert? Lauren’s famous Wacky Cake. Legendary.
It saddens my heart that in a few short weeks, we will have to say goodbye to Lauren + George when they move for George’s doctoral internship at the University of Boston. You two have been so special to us in these first few years of marriage.
Friends, you will be dearly missed.
With love (and a few tears),
daniel + megan
